About the group

Since 1991 these true pirates gather once a week in their amiable home base Geertien at Muggenbeet. Its their halting place where at the bar the rudeness of daily life can be forgotten and a lot of food can be put away. When you find an opportunity to visit this particular place (pub, bistro, hotel), you will be surprised by its charm and serenity.

When you pass by and we happen to be around, we will gladly sing some good songs for you. Passers-by are often surprised by the rock-hard rules to which this motley crew obeys when doing its repertoire. Unwritten rules and regulations apply to everyone and denying them leads inevitably to keelhaul. In short, genuine pirates! For we aim at the highest: 1st tenors, baritones, 2nd tenors and basses present a multi-voiced repertoire whereof the choir’s performance and sound form the main elements.

A number of rousing sailor songs, old ballads and compelling shanties fill its repertoire. From cosy old Dutch to semi-classics: Bertold Brecht and Schubert. The farewell at the quay, the sinking of the Batavia, the watery grave, but also the going home, its all sang about by these scrawny men in a manner which may give even you a lump in your throat. The musical performance of ‘Storm and Averij’ can be listened in on 4 CD’s, of which 3 have already been sold out.

Being direct descendants of the true Zuiderzee pirates, this ‘Storm and Averij’ choir roams national and international festivals. We do not adhere to any musical boundaries. We perform about 35 times a year and show our public the easy side of life. Even children are often fascinated by our performance, and their initial astonishment usually swiftly changes into enthousiasm and joy.
